Good in July, 2026

I am once again reminded of the good side of the internet. I used to be able to get it in comments on fora. Not so much any more, but private/invite-only places (such as lobste.rs) are improving while most other places (Hacker News, all of Reddit) are getting worse.

So here's a little bit of it. I hope these links remain good for much longer than July 2026.

The good stuff

Surging forward from my consciousness into yours, it's Elle's Homepage! Elle's homepage has been rolling around in my head for months, as if my skull were a marble track in an elementary school classroom during an indoor recess. Everyone I've sent that link to, I've sent with no context or explanation, and they have been very happy to receive it. Elle, if you're reading this, you rock.

Another personal page that I've been thinking about is NetOpWibby's, which is, among many other good things, a testament to the fact it is possible to do dozens of things well. Raise your hand if you've also dreamed of a multiverse where all of your art (music, drawing, fiction, everything!) are connected and true. My hand is up. NetOpWibby's is too. And on top of all, Wibby loudly proclaims a love for the Megaman Battle Network series, which might be more important.

I found Elle's page through NetOpWibby's, or vice versa, so they're linked in my mind. And we haven't even mentioned the abnormal greatness of both of those websites. Just delight in the design for a minute. Then read their good words.

Speaking of good words, how about a great piece by MisterJT called "I hate the way we talk online"? Please enjoy.

I don't buy things if I can help it, but this month I came across the Yuzu Keycaps website. This company delights me by offering something that can be deceptively hard to find without deeply searching or monitoring drops, or trading aftermarket, and at a not-unreasonable price. Access to exactly the keycaps I need, in the color I want, that look how I want, with the legends I want, without having to navigate design and printing. They even have an advanced editor, which I haven't jumped into yet, but I can imagine being even better for making something that is entirely unique.

Back to human people (sorry, Citizens United), Dan Talalá's journal appeals to me. Well-written writings with beautiful photographs and good self-awareness. Dan has only been writing/publishing these on the site for a few months, and I relish that freshness.

Also on Dan's site is a reworked /gear page. I'm a fan of the "shelf" metaphor and the overall vibe.

Closing

It's been a good month. I'm grateful for the people who share and post online, outside of the bubbles and walled gardens that are so very tempting and powerful. The gardens can be lovely and fragrant, and they have helped me discover some of the people and websites I've linked above.
